Electricity is a network industry like others the Foundation studies. Like other mature network industries, it has a history of close regulation at the state and federal level. And electricity is foundational to consumers and the economy - for the foreseeable future the grid will supply the electrons to make the information economy work.

As with other network industries, technological change is an important part of the drive toward competitive electricity markets, as are the ebbs and flows of federal and state regulation. The key is to continue the move toward real, consumer-beneficial competition as opposed to managed competition schemes that are in reality new, heavy-handed regulatory models.

As in their other areas of study, Foundation scholars challenge the prevailing wisdom in their search for sound policy solutions for the digital era.
